Which drinks count?
More than you might expect. The research here is friendlier than the internet's rules.
Water, sparkling water, milk, juice, tea, and coffee all contribute to your day. In controlled testing, milk and juice kept people hydrated at least as well as still water.
The dehydration reputation is not supported for regular drinkers: in a controlled crossover study, a moderate daily coffee habit hydrated the same as equal amounts of water. Caffeinated drinks count.
Alcohol. It pushes your body to shed more water than the drink brings, so leave it out of your count. Sugary drinks do count as fluid, but they bring their sugar with them — water is still the better default.
Why this is worth counting on a GLP-1
When the medication quiets your appetite, it is easy to drink less without noticing — fluids fade along with food. The joint clinical advisory on GLP-1 nutrition recommends small meals every three to four hours "while drinking adequate fluids," and warns that dehydration from severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea can cause acute kidney injury. The prescribing information for semaglutide carries the same warning: most reported kidney injuries happened in people who got dehydrated from those side effects. On a rough stomach day, fluids are the priority — and if you cannot keep them down, call your prescriber.

Electrolytes: helpful, and easy to overdo
Electrolyte packets are everywhere in GLP-1 communities. They have a real job — and a real ceiling.
Why they come up on a GLP-1
Electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium — travel with your fluids. Vomiting and diarrhea drain both at once, and when you are eating much less food overall, less sodium and potassium arrives with it. So the question is fair.
When a packet earns its place
A rough stomach day, a hot afternoon, a hard workout, a stretch where food will not stay down — one packet in your water on days like that is a reasonable tool for most people. It is a patch for a bad day, not a daily requirement.
Why more is not better
Packets stack fast. Many popular ones carry several hundred to 1,000 mg of sodium each — check your label — while the Dietary Guidelines cap a whole day at 2,300 mg and the average American diet already runs about 3,400 mg. Several packets a day on top of food can land far past the limit, which matters most if you have high blood pressure. Extra potassium carries its own risk: with kidney disease or common blood-pressure medications (ACE inhibitors, ARBs, potassium-sparing diuretics), too much can disturb heart rhythm. If packets have become a daily habit rather than an occasional tool, bring it up with your prescriber.
